has anyone ever had a split into the cavity heal with plugging or captan paste before? i would tend to think that once that seal is broken it is over. i just was curious if the interior pumpkin flesh will grow over and heal the split if the outside of the cracks were plugged. i took a piece of straw and slid it threw both 1/2 inch splits on each side of my blossum with no resistance so i know for sure air made it into the cavity. i am considering this pumpkin done, but it still grew 12 pounds with the plugged splits since yesterday and is 142+93+90 for an estimated weight of 691.
second question. will the seeds continue to mature if i keep the cracks plugged? i am hoping that by today on day 48 that the seeds are close to maturity. i am going to let it grow until it quits with the plugs, then have it weighed locally and unofficially for my own curiosity, and then harvest the seeds.
any past experiences with splits and seed maturation with a split pumpkin are greatly appreciated.
what is the average day of pumpkin growth until seeds are mature also?

SHAZZY, I read in a diary somewhere, cant think off hand whos is was, might be tillers in 2002 or 03 not sure, but I have heard that people will take another piece off another pumpkin and skin graft it in so to say, I think it said something like it would heal together, Also the guy cut it open after the season was over and said he couldnt hardly tell where he pieced it from the inside. Its almost like mending a broken tree branch, after it heals u have a big not there. I dont know if this would work but i would try it if it where me.

Shazzy, one more thing, I just opened one of my pumpkins today that rotted from the stem end, inside where it was rotting the seeds rotted too.Any where inside the pumpkin that was brown including the seeds was rotten, and the part inside where it wasnt rotting yet they was fine. Brooks

thanks brooks for the info. i also just read len stellpflug's article on pumpkin crack healing and i will try the combo of some fresh pumpkin flesh from a cull and some sap from my other pumpkin's oozing on its surface cracking and then apply some captan on top of that and see what happens. just another science experiment to fool around with. it can't hurt that is for sure. i will see how it it works and report it in my diary either way.
