I have a 842 Eaton with two pumpkins on it. Using the "Wishbone" pattern, I am gaining a average of 5 to 6 inches on the two pumpkins. Would you keep both pumpkins? or would you just keep the first one that was pollinated because it is the biggest?

The main reason I am sort of asking this question is, if I cull one of them, will the one remaining grow to fast and burst?

my opinion is that i would take 3 days and slowly cut through the stem of the one you want to cull. will the remaining one split?...nobody can predict or make any gaurantees, i think that is part of the hobby. play it safe or go for broke, you're call. best of luck!

Is that 5 to 6 inches on each pumpkin? or is that a combined # of inches from Both?

If you're getting 5 to 6 inches on both pumpkins, I would keep them both and try for 2 BIG pumpkins! It's always good to have back ups....... Trust me.

Sounds good to me, I say keep them both. I'm assuming each is on a different vine in your wishbone pattern... Sounds like the wishbone pattern is the most conducive to growing 2 fruit anyways.

And as the Subaru guy says it's always good to have a back-up just in case! If only he had had another Subaru as a back-up...

Is that 5 to 6" circ. or OTT gain?
If it is circ. I would also leave them both, they are doing well.
If it is the OTT gain then that's not enough, so in this case I would cut one of them to get the other one speed up.
Best wishes, Martin

B - I'd leave 'em both on, comparing the growth rate at 5 day intervals.
If growth significantly drops or slows down & you want to be down to one fruit on the plant I'd make my cut where the 2nd main joins the stump.
If buried, the auxilary root system should support the 2nd fruit.
Good Luck!

After several days of watching April's 530 Smith in the same wishbone pattern. Her Two pumpkins were gaining OK weights. I tried to convince her to cull Nataani who was growing slower and focus on Kemi. I do not think she is disatisfied with the results after tonights measurements. You can either have two nice pumpkins or go for broke. No would of, should have, or could have after the season is done.

If there is enough milk to go around for two babies, then let them grow, but if not ,isn't one 800-900 lbr. better than a 500 - and a 400. The decision is a tough one, and I would choose 1 fruit and go for broke, then again depending on the crosses ???, well that is another whole different decision to be made wheather it's a keeper or not...Good luck....JK
