in may we put our young seedlings out in a hand made, well protected ,heated, best in the area greenhouse--our seed stocks are sure to produce the next hot item

in june we prune, spray, train, and feed our babies

in july we pollinate and wait ( but we already know this could be the year )

at 20 days we are jumping for joy, already projecting where we will be come october

at 30 days we are still looking good and getting strong daily weight gains

at 45 days with the cup all but in our hands ( we hope ), the fruit starts to slow

at 55 days we realize the world record is slipping away, but the state weighoff is still within reach

at 65 days the state championship may be lost but then theres that local fair weighoff in a couple weeks

at 80 days the local fair is out of the question but im gonna win the neighborhood championship ( for sure )

theres always someone we can beat

Dick,

That is classic! Funny as heck too. You've been at this a good long time haven't you?

Perhaps we should concern ourselves with just beating ourselves.

LOL!

Goals this year:
1) New personal best
2) Learn more about the plant & what it can handle
3) Have something good to show on Oct 2nd.

Every year it seems as if the Heavy Hitters are in a class by themselves. Maybe in a few more years.....

Ya'll grow 'em BIG!

I have to agree with Tremor on this one.

Yup thats my goal.. I got off to a bad start. both weather wize and animals.. first pollinations didnt happen till
July 10th by july 12th both were taken by ratcoons..

a few weeks later.. well actually today.. Aug 5th 12.45am

i pollinated 2 females on both main vines.. one is 24 ft out
on the 1178 L Wentzell ( selfed) and the other is 25 ft out on the main of the 620 Boyton pollinated with 1178L Wentzell male

both look good and if they both if not one takes and reaches 100 lbs i'll be a happy first year grower :-)

DaveM

My goal is 100 lbs still have 60 more days before growing season is done so we will see.

The night I filed my seeds was the best day of my season. It has slowly gone down hill from there.

I'm looking foward to May 1st 2005 so I can get those positive, high expectation feelings back again.

The biggest kick in the ass is after you've been doing this for a good number of years and end up with nothing to show for it! Newbies-get out while you can! (There isn't ALWAYS someone you can beat!)

i to used to feel that way
i treasure some of the friends ive made all over the country because of this hobby
but i go by the belief that " even a blind squirrl gets a nut sometimes "
besides ,ive been in the front row and the back ,--i like the view better from the front

As long as your allways observing and learning each year you are one step closer to your goals, whatever that may be. All of the people that consistantly grow large pumpkins are a testament to that.Learning is the key!!!
