JUST A WORD OF HOPE FOR THOSE GROWERS THAT MAY HAVE LOST A BASE OR TWO ALREADY THIS YEAR ON 7-20 OUR 1068 WALLACE ( 2003 845 X 798 ) BECAME INFECTED WITH A BACTERIAL PROBLEM SO WE ELECTED TO CUT THE BASE ( IT WAS OZZING ) AND THE MAIN UP TO WITHIN 3 FEET OF THE FRUIT ( FRUIT Was 21 days old at this time and the cir was at 70 inches) the plant survived with three sides off the main before the fruit and several sides and the main after ( we are keeping the main growing ) as of today ( 13 days later ) we are at 115 cir and the lbs per day have gone from 17 per day on the 26th to 22 per day as of today this fruit will never see its potential but,it proves a point---that you can grow something respectable with no base and very little main if you stick with it dick ripga

Pap,
Did you treat the remaining vine any differently than normal such as increased soil at nodes or foliar fertilizer?

trem no we did nothing different after the base and most of main before fruit was cut out as time goes on we may push a little additional 0-0-28 or some 5-10-40 that we use at present ( sparingly ) we will also let a few sides grow on the main after the fruit so we have something to help the fruit along by mid august however i will dead end everything on this plant in hopes all the nutrients will find there way back to the fruit dick

I have a 212 pounder just 4 ft or so off the main. I did not mean for it to happen that way it just did. I have buried alot of the main and have only let secondaries grow so long before burring them. Yesterday I buried the main 15 to 20 ft from the pumpkin and it grew 32lbs in that day!!!! Some hope for those that did not grow a pumpkin at least 10ft out on the vine. Doeski

doeski we always go back and clear off the dirt on top of the main at this time so we can better see any problems that might crop up on the main, plus we like to spray the main with fungicide when we apply to rest of plant once the borer egg laying season is over its good to be able to spot a problem before its to late to react
