the same way you get a tarp under one... you roll the pumpkin up on its side then put the carpet under it, as far as you can. Then set the pumpkin down. Walk or slip the pumpkin to the middle of the carpet. with a tarp you can stuff extra material under the pumpkin so it is in the center when you set it back down. then you roll it the other way and pull out the bunched up tarp.
for a 400-500 lb pumpkin you can use a normal plastic type tarp folded in half twice. a 10x12 ft would be fine. folded twice would give a 5x6 ft lifting surface. with 4-6 people to lift it, you shouldn't have any problems. adding handles would be nice but they aren't nessicary.
you can put on a handle by taking a golf ball (or something of similar size) then wrap the tarp around it. Tie it off with some rope. the slide a 6-8 inch section of 1/2 inch pvc pipe onto the rope then do another golf ball tie in on the other side of the pvc handle about 8-10 inches over from the first one. add as many as you need. one in each corner and in the middle on each long side and you'd be set. a picture would have come in handy here. one of these days i'll remember to take a picture of the one I made a few years back. good luck gordon

thanks for the tip onthe carpet..and the tarp..but I just can get the idea of the golf ball and the pvc pipe for a handle....Im trying to cover all my bases as how to move this monster. Any ideas on using a front end loader or a bucket ona farm tractor..? The owner of a local farm store said he would bring his machines and help if he could get his picture taken withthe giant...of course a picture would be no problem but trying to comprehend the use of a lifting device is driving me batty..So I guess I would need to device some mechanism for lifting with a chain or something...so I hope you or the other can send some advice this way...thanks and good luck to you.
