i use captan. its a powder fungicide that can be found on line or at a good nursery that has a nice variety of gardening products. i just sprinkle it on cuts, splits or cracks to help heal it up without fungus spores taking hold in the wounds. if the split is in an awkward place where it is hard to sprinkle from the can onto the wound, then try first putting it an a newspaper and blow it with a empty turkey baster towards the area. a fine dry paint brush would probably also work. otherwise tilting the can and shaking it sidways to a cut will leave more captan on the ground then the wound itself. i have learned the hard way and am on my second can this season from wasting it before i finally learned.
