The recent issue of The Main Vine incorrectly listed the
Puyallup Fair Weigh-Off as Sept. 3rd. The correct date is Sept. 10th.

Still kinda early for a really big one. I gather it will not be an official weigh in, correct?

It's official, just early. The scales are certified and the rules require that the fruit be sound. I'm hoping I can do better than 4th place this year.

I'm with Gordon... GO UTES!

The record is 922.5 from Geneva Emmons. Most years the
winner has been in the 600's to 700's.

What to do, what to do? Do you sacrifice a reasonable fruit and hope for a win at Puyallup or keep it and hope for something bigger in October. How much growth will you get for those four weeks? What to do?

It all depends on our temperatures in September. If it stays 77-82°, you might add an additional 100 pounds.

Last year my fair pumpkin and my Des Moines weighoff pumpkin were grown on the same plant. At the time I harvested the fruit for the fair they had an identical OTT measurement for total inches. The fruit at the fair went 601 lbs. the fruit from the same plant that was the same size went 715 lbs. 7 weeks later. At the time I harvested it both were the largest in the patch. I figured I could get the other one on the plant a few more pounds if it didn't have two on the plant. This year I will probably take one that is the only one growing on that particualr plant. I won't know for certain which one it will be until I cut it from the vine. But 100 lbs. or better in the final month is clearly possible. I just hope I don't lose too many down the stretch and have the decision made for me.
