I am soon facing the same problem when my wife made the obvious answer "Tape two cloth tape measures together". Those sewing wives think of the darndest things.
Otherwise there are pumpkin tape lines available in the market. I don't have the names with me at the moment (sorry) I'm sure someone will reply with specifics.

you can just use a string and then measure the string or go to the hardware store and buy a surveyers tape or order a pumpkin measuring tape.

I purchased a 100'soft and highly flexible fiberglass contractor's tape which works very well. (So far I haven't needed anything over 100')! Remember that the OTT total is a lot more accurate than just measuring circumference.

yeah, Don Langevin's site. wrote the book on growing giant pumpkins! a given, really. you would like one of these tapes... you go to the above address and click on "order form"... and/or may have to click on "gardeners"... not sure what happens after that, 'cause i always call him to order things, lol. heck, i don't remember even THAT at the moment. either weigh, contact him, and get yer tape! get two, and tell 'im eric gerry sent ya----lol---eric gerry

I went to WalMart and went where they sell their fabric and thread and the like and I bought a cloth tape and it is 122" on one side and when you get that far then just turn it over and it measures to 288".

Use the side that measures to 288 and your pumpkin will be bigger!
