Havent seen these in a few years, due to even climates, but am beginning to wonder with this huge onset of rain and soon to come hot weather, how much Dill rings will become a part of this seasons fruits. Most think dill rings are genetic, I believe it is a time line of sorts of a change in the weather patterns during that phase of the fruits growth, whether it be heavy rain for a while, a cooling down, then heat, or whatever..

Bruce Whittier's pumpkin, the 1448 pounder, the heaviest one ever weighed, had dill rings. Dill rings are weak points in the hull of the pumpkin that grow in bands around the fruit. They are not fun, because they can crack. Worse yet, you can grow a beast of a pumpkin with no problems (except Dill Rings) until the morning of the weigh-off, when one of your loaders accidentally lets go his corner of the tarp... and the pumpkin cracks like an egg! Woah. Ugly thought. My apologies. You see, when folks disect their pumpkins after the weigh-off, they often find the shell to be 14" or so thick in most places, but only 4" or so thick where the dill ring was.
Check out the pictures of Whittiers monster and notice the "rings" around the pumpkin. That's what we're talk'n bout.

i have an indentation in the middle of my 1301 eaton that is directly on the lower backside that reminds me of the picture of the 1057 bobier on my fridge, it dips enough in one spot that it may dill out, who knows though.

Rock, I was woundering the same thing. I believe that weather may play an important factor in the formation of some dill rings. I have two fruit that are showing signs of very eary dill rings near the stem end when the temperature was very cool.

the ribs are the ones that go from stem to blossom. a dill ring goes around the pumpkin the other way ( from side to side)

Oh wanted to add..never had one being my second year.. But dont think i want one either. Imagine, the rib area has to be thinner then the rest, now you have a dill ring going the oppisite way making them even thinner. good luck to whover has one!!

I believe that Dill rings are caused by shrinkage of the internal flesh of the pumpkin due to dehydration and insufficient water availability. I have suspected this for some time. Last year, when we had lots of rain, it seemed that there were far fewer Dill ring splits. I believe we will not see many here in the east this year also.

There are many theories as to what causes Dill rings.
Incomplete pollination, weather fluctuations, inconsistent water & or fert,& genetics. 1st time I've heard of shrinkage but I guess this falls under inconsistent water.
Not like George Kostanza...SHRINKAGE!
