this is happening and wondering how. is it a disease? the plants are not over watered by any means. rain here has been very low all summer and my watering has lacked as well unfortunately. the plants are rotting a few inches down in soil. this has happned to 4 of 8 plants. no bug evidence. plants were set in ground with plenty of rotted manure on land that was just plowed this year on farm.

Joe,

Contact Mary Inman at The Dept of Plant Pathology, Ct Ag. Experiment Station, 123 Huntington St., New Haven, CT 06504

Tel 203-974-8601

She'll need a portion of the affected tissue (root/crown sample).

The tests will cost nothing. Call her ahead of time so she can talk you through collecting & delivering the sample. Also to make sure they'll be in the lab & not the field when you arrive (if delivering in person).

I fear it sounds like either Phytophthora or Pythium if there are really no insects feeding at the crown/root interface area. That are possibly vine borers have settled into only the collar area.

Please keep me posted.

Steve

Hey Joe, I would like to see the picture. Did you post it in your diary? Jernej

I had a pumpkin seedling (not an AG but an Lumina PVP or Albino pumpkin) that I had to Transplant but I broke a bit of the bottom root and all the roots rotted off except 2 inches of the main root that was rotting off but I didn't give up on it and gave it lots of water and it bounced back and is in amazing shape ready for pollination.
