If you have to pick a side vine to set fruit on, what characteristics should you look for in a vine? Should you pick one that's as far as possible from the stump of the main vine, or does it matter? Also does it matter how much vine is past the fruit? I have one that's set on a vine that was eaten off by a deer within a couple feet of the fruit.

Normally you would want the fruit to set as far as possible from the stump of the plant and it's generally agreed that the portion of the plant after the fruit provides very little for the pumpkin. Some people cut the vine right after the fruit even and especially when the fruit is on a secondary vine. Hopefully you'll get some more opinions. Michel
