The rain has been coming down for over a week now, and it has become very frustrating. The pumpkins that I was flying high with have gotten ruddy skin color, compared to the young shiney texture they had before the rain. Rain is predicted for the next ten days here also, making me wondering what to do.

Fruits are aborting on my 895 Hester, 723 Bobier, and not as healthy looking on others. The 898 Knauss pumpkin, which is over 250 pounds according to the OTT, has a crack of some nature developing, which I have scraped out and treated with Captan. This treatment is useless if the moisture level inside the patch is 100 % all the time, because in order for it to heal, you have to have dry weather. So I will continue to apply captan, continue to scrape, reapply, until I am either inside of the fruit, or it eventually dries up..

And then depression set in.............

We have had so much rain here in central new york. One night last week, in less then a hour we got one tenth of a inch less then four(4) inches of rain. my pumpkin patch is like a big mud hole. The only way I can bury my vines are with the three piles of compost I have in the patch. If I took a shovel of soil from my patch, half of it will run off the shovel.I have to wear hunting packs to go in the patch. it's so muddy in places, I have to watch my step because the mud wants to pull my packs off of my feet....

I have the sun huts over the pumpkins, that is one of the only benefits. As Brian stated, it is like a mudpit. A virtual pumpkin Woodstock, if you will. The rain is coming down in buckets as we speak, kinda like the falls in Niagara coming off my roof. Forecast for my area over the next ten days is not any better..

Anyone know how to find out the amount of rainfall that has come down in a period of time for an area?

Anyhow, the drinks are flowing heavily, and I have actually wondered what crazed individuals would put themselves through this emotional distress! Sadly, all I can do is sit back and watch it rain, stay out of the patch (which looks like the next ten days also) and hope it all stays together.

Man, I wasn't aware of the weather you guys were getting. We are bone dry up here; it's starting to look like last summer . . . send some of it up to Wisconsin.

I live 30 miles west of Binghamton, but we get more rain than Binghamton, believe this or nor, as I live at the junction of the Susquehanna and CHemung rivers, getting 2 waterways worth of weather. The rains follow the rivers and dump on our area, sometimes 2 fold over them. It will be warming up soon, so hoping that helps some.

Kevin Brown stopped tonite to check on things (of 1007 Brown fame) and he said I shouldnt be too concerned at this point, he was amazed at the size of the fruits I have so far.

It rains here for 3 days and then we just might get sun for a day...IF we are lucky! My pumpkins have only needed waterered twice (since they acheived some size) and except for fertilizing, they are doing fine water wise...albeit they are small plants!
How we are going to get dry suncured hay for our two Norwegian Fjord horses, I have no idea. This blasted rain...I am getting fed up. Luckily, my punkin patch is on a side hill so the rain does drain off. Our gardens are doing well, in spite of the wet....but we should have our hay in the barn by now. *sigh*

Just saw the weather forcast for NEPA and suppose to rain every day but Wednesday. Guess that will be the day I take the boys to Gettysburg. A day away from the pumpkin patch. Imagine that. I am there at least 3 or 4 times a day. Wife thinks it is silly. Especially in the rain. Probably is. All the more reason to do it :o)
