This past year was my first season here in South Carolina I grew a 270lb est wt but it matured in July and the fair is on now early Oct.I will plant later next year but what do you hard core pumpkin growers suggest I do to prepare my patch for next year ?

Add a LOT of leaves and (if you can get it) fresh manure before winter. Figure about how much you would add, and then TRIPLE that amount! In early spring, get a soil test done to see where you stand.

Everyone that i have talked to sends there soil samples off and has them analysed. Do u or anyone know where i could get this done and how much it would cost.

Penn State will do it for $6, including soil mailers and return shipping. There are other more detailed samples that will run a lot more money.

I have heard that you can plant a cover crop of Winter rye....And then till that in In the spring. I put leaves, lots of manure in the patch and tilled it in very good...Then i planted a cover crop of winter rye over the top of that....Chris

I picked up my leaves that were set out at residents....They were small leaves...Worked them right in!

we have a big machine the city puls behind a tractor to suck up the leaves, i know a guy who got them to dump several loads on his garden and man he had pumpkins galore!!!
