In theory, some element needed for growth is no longer available. That or the genetic potential has been reached. Or a pest is at work.
What seed stock?
When was the last soil test & what element(s) were questionable?
Has an insect or disease rendered the plant disfunctional?

The same thing happened to me last year. About the 15th of August (it was a slow start)I had a circumference of around 60 inches. It was really hot last year and I think that had something to do with it. I found another pumpkin on a secondary (August 19th) and it was picking up steam when the really cold nights started) I got it to 115 lbs and I think it would have gotten much bigger if it had more time. The first one finished at 141.5 lbs. Go with the second pumpkin, but keep an eye on the first to see if it gets back on track. You still have lots of time to get a big one. Good luck, Alan
