What causes a crack and is it terminal? I have a crack on the main vine about an inch long about 3 or 4 inches before the pumpkin. Can it be repaired? Will it cause any problems to the pumpkin or any of the vine after the crack?

Is it a split or a crack? Split running vine, Crack across the vine. A split should not hinder it much, A crack is a different situation. No repair just keep it dry and it will heal itself.

Thank you for clarifying the difference for me. It is a split. The split appears to be drying but rain today and tomorrow. It is 1.5" long and about 1/16" wide. What causes a split?

Rootbeer,,is it length wise,,or across the vine? Keep it dry and apply sulfur or captan to it..Gotta get it healed,or it will keep on splitting...I lost my vine to splits this year,,it kept raining, and raining..Never could get one of the 3 healed..Not sure what to tell you the cause is....It just happens..I wish ya luck buddy.... RootBeer. Thanks for asking the question. I've a split and have been worried about it. I feel better now.
By the way, I cracked the main vine trying to train it. It is a major (60% of the way through) crack. I thought all was lost. I shoveled dirt over the crack and it continues to grow. Amazing.
It's my rookie year. Does it show?

Splits are OK and will heal themselves. Keep it dry and it will form a scar over the split area. A fungicide application would be OK, although I have never used one. Dry is the key word.

Rootbeer, Thanks for the question. I've been having splits and cracks (more like burst) in my stump since early June. But they keep growing and I keep worring.
With all this rain I figured there isn't much one can do. Is there? Besides keeping it dry in a NorthEastern Monsoon?
I'm just glad I haven't gotten the 8 inch rain dump or the hail that keeps falling around the area.

PaperP I am also a rookie and I am sure it shows also. But that is ok. These men and women are really good here. I asked the question wrong and I learned more than I expected. Even us rookies can teach each other. Thanks for all the help. Good luck all.

Homebrew sorry to hear about the cracks. It seems like it rains almost every other day here in NEPA. Yes sometimes like a monsoon. Now I cut one pumpkin off the second one I accidently broke off, the third one never pollinated though I thought I did a good job the fourth one is doing just fine and now there is a fifth and sixth but I did not have any male flowers open this morning. Which was my biggest worry since I had the first female flower, excluding all the rain that we are getting.
