I realize that we're in the middle of the growing season, but I'm wondering how you folks acquire your seeds. I'm sure there will be different avenues that are used. I'm hoping to acquire seeds from a couple of heavy hitters(Mombert and Hebb). What would be the best way to do this? Do I somehow get their emial, or home address, and request them? Or attend a seed auction and hope they are offered? If you do know either of their home addresses or email addresses, please don't post here(I don't want to violate their privacy), you can email me. Any suggestions are welcome.

Hi Doug,
I see your point..... having a seed with a nice, famous name in it gives many beginners a good feeling.
But I wage to say that any of those Heavy-Hitter seeds (as long as they are unproven) are probably not any better than any other seed you might get.
If Kirk Mombert, e.g., is doing a 783 Daletas X 845 Bobier cross it most likely (from theory) will not be better than the same cross done by myself.
From theory, it also makes no difference that Kirk's pumpkin will probably weigh over 1000lbs whereas my fruit will be in the 500lbs range.
Not wanting to do shameless self-promotion here - just wanting to explain that all what counts is the cross. Neither the name of the grower, nor the weight of the pumpkin should have any effect on the potential of a seed.
There will be many growers offering their seeds for free in the fall again. These seeds are very easy to obtain and most likely just as good as the ones from the Heavy Hitters as long as they have a nice cross.
If all goes well I will have available seeds with some great genetics (involving the 845 Bobier, 783 Daletas, 801.5 Stelts, 1016 Daletas, etc.) to send out for free this coming fall just like many other growers.
You are welcome to them just like any other grower asking me for them.
Best wishes, Martin

Thanks for your comments and your offer Martin! The reason I'm looking for these two seeds are that both have proven to produce the type of pumpkins I'm after, and I'd like to cross them. May I ask how you acquired the Bobier, Deletas, and Stelts seeds? I would imagine at least some of those are hard to come by.

Yes, you are right, Doug.
Most of the seeds that I am growing were hard to find if not almost impossible to get as in the case of the 801.5 Stelts.
I either get my seeds from the growers themselves or through seed trades. Most of the ones that I am growing this year have come from trades but of course this requires having a nice collection of seeds so that your trade-partner finds something that he wants in exchange for the seed that you are looking for.
In many cases even the growers themselves have not left enough seeds to send out once they are proven because they already sent most seeds out at a time when they were still unproven, only keeping some of each pumpkin for themselves.
I hope you can get the seeds that you are after!
But be advised that the best seed won't help you if you are not doing your "homework" properly or if the weather isn't cooperating (as for me this year...)
Best wishes, Martin

You can join different clubs early in the year, and you get seeds from the clubs as a bonis for joining. Check out the PGVG.com. For 35.00, you get some really great seeds.

Great to hear that there are already people interested in my crosses.... If you are interested you can send me an email with your mailing address. I will print it out and send you some of my seeds this coming fall. Of course, at this time I can't promise yet what crosses I will have available... but sure some nice ones... Best wishes, Martin
