Hey Doug, you having problems getting a main vine set? Sorry to hear that, If I was you, I would take one torwards the end of the plant that had just been pollinated within the past couple of days, move the vine, and any vines in the area (if you can, without disturbing too many roots) to give enough room for the pumpkin to go. Good luck, see you on the 17th?

Geo...I have had good luck with side vine fruit. Not 1000 lbs, but the 603 was grown on a side vine, along with a 400 pounder, and a 500 pounder. 490 was grown about 35 ft out on the main. I would use a secondary about in the middle of the patch, and cut the vine right after the fruit. Also cut the sides closest to the fruit away as it grows. I dont know what else there is to do if you cant get a good main vine fruit. Good Luck!

Geo, last year I had a new PB (747.2) on the second secondary from the stump. It was 6 ft from the main. I couldn't get one to grow on the main without blowing up at the size of a bowling ball. Good luck...... Phil

Phil, I got a nice one pollinated on the main of the 747.2, about 14 feet out!! Starting to swell! :0)

My 320 was grown on a side vine. The same basic rules apply. Just treat it as if it were on a main.

Good Luck!

HTGIII indicates that you should use a secondary close to the stump (A secondary off the first two feet on the main is best).

I think this may be a "regional" question. Setting a fruit close to the stump here usually means the fruit stops in August when the vine dies back...so I'd say set one out way further (as far as July 15th cut-off date will allow, yet close to main)...BUT...vines may not die off in Oregon's cooler climate with less harsh sunshine as early....so go with local's experiences.....G

Phil, I pollinated the first on my main at 15 ft two days ago. Thats all I've had on the 747 so far. Good luck, I hope you grow a monster.

Remember, the discussion is about setting on a secondary, not on the main. The reference to "close to the stump" is talking about where the SECONDARY comes off the main, not where the pumpkin is set. The pumpkin may be set 12 feet out on a secondary which comes off the main within a foot of the stump. OK?

That's great Keith, I hope we all grow a new PB from the same seed. My 747 was flooded underwater and took a couple weeks to recover, but since it has recovered it has out grown my other two plants and will be the first to hit the fence. It is now longer than the 842 Eaton and the 1097 Beachy......Phil
