You know, like a belly button. Are the lobes supposed to suck back into the pumpkin or shrivel up and fall off? I have two potential keepers set on the main. The lobe base on the larger one seems to be growing along with the pumpkin. It is at least 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The pumpkin is the size of an average watermelon. On the smaller one (bowling ball size) the base of the lobes looks like it is starting to shrivel, it is about 3/4 inch. The plant is a 1225.5 Jutras,(1016 Daletas x 845 Bobier'00) it throws twins, double leaves and twin males same as kilr's post http://www.bigpumpkins.com/DisplayPhoto.asp?pid=2979 http://www.bigpumpkins.com/MsgBoard/ViewThread.asp?b=3&p=79310 The blossom on the Outy was slightly mutant. It looked like it had an extra partial lobe with a seed blowout. Maybe it is a twin. I am going to have to choose between the two fairly soon, any sugestions? I took pictures if anyone wants to see this. thanks, Cindy

The "lobed base" or "outy" should still be intact on your pumpkin at the end of the season, unless it's broken off.

Is the lobe base that seems to be shriveling a bad sign?

Now I am really bummed, slightly mutant is like sort of pregnant; it is or it isn't. Check this out: http://www.bigpumpkins.com/ViewArticle.asp?id=63 Looks like seeds in the blossom are way bad and worse yet you may not know it 'till much later.

It should shrivel and dry out, if it gets mushy, not so good. Len Stellpflug observed quite a while ago that a blossom with seeds in it spelled trouble later on.

It is shriveling or maybe more like shrinking, but not at all mushy. So I guess it's okay. The web address in my previous post is Len Stellpflugs' article re seeds in the blossom if anyone wants to read it. So I guess the big one has got to go. This is going to be painful. Cindy
