Cheese, You can usually tell within a day or two if the pollination has taken, Usally 2 days after pollination the fruit has doubled in size. If by the end of the week The fruit hasnt changed at all i would say its going to be a gonner!! I pollinated my 620 Boyton Female this mourning ( first one) 6.30 am and already tonight 10.30 pm it looks
like it had already changed a tad.

Good Luck

However, I have grown some that I thought had taken and ended up soft? That was after a week or so and the plant was basketball size.

40" in circumference and they are good to go. Never seen one abort that was larger than that.

What if the vine ahead of the pumpkin starts to loose it's thickness, should I let it grow or dead head it? Sorry I broke in here on this topic, but been wanting to ask this question.

I would say that if they make it past softball size, you are 99% sure that it's a good one. I've only had 2 plants that would abort larger than that. one did it at slightly larger than doftball size. it turned about 30 sets to mush before i pulled the plant. the other rotted them when they were 80-90 pounds. both were total plant failures, so if it's just a situation where the plant is good with the fruit, you should be fine once they hit softball size.
