I'm interested in hearing what you guys and gals think about which part of the plant feeds a pumpkin. I know many people feel that the plant between the stump and the fruit is what counts and that there is not much backfeeding from the main beyond the fruit. I've seen evidence pointing to this by the difference in the size of the vine before and after the fruit.
But there have been some monsters grown close to the stump. Does anyone know how much plant (ft2) was between the stump and the fruit for these plants? Perhaps there was a large secondary main structure (strong side vine grown in christmas tree style) which back fed the main and consequently the fruit? or was there backfeeding from the main beyond the fruit? here are some interesting cases, add any if you find them!!
1123 Sherwood 2003----7ft 1153 Eaton 2003----8ft 1081 Wentzell 2003---5.5ft!!! 1064 Sherwood 2003----6ft 1061 Whittier UOW 2001----7ft secondary!! pollinated on the same day as the 1131 UOW Whittier(same plant, main 10ft) yet just 70lbs lighter(meaning it still got damn good flow) 986 Companion 2003---4ft!!!!!!! 961 Phillips 2003----5ft 934 Mombert 2000----6ft secondary main Perhaps there are other cases where the the fruit is further away from the base but the plant is narrow, leading to small plant area between the stump and the fruit...
It would be interesting to know what kind of max growth rate these fruit hit... Did they still attain massive growth or did they sustain more leisurely rates for longer periods?
