I found a rather strange male flower on my 1016 Daletas this morning, the blossom was SO HUGE that I at first thought it was a super female. Check out photos in my photo gallery. Anyone else ever experience something this bizarre?

You have more pollen and You don't have to use many male flowers :)

I had a couple weird males like that last year, with multiple stamens...mine weren't quite so big though. It must be somethin' in the water ;-)

Maybe I just don't remember correctly but I don't recall getting all these deformities in the past (females with seeds, flat vines, double vines, etc.). I have had several deformed ones myself this year which is new for me.
I wonder if some of our recurrent cross-pollinations aren't causing some of this. If you look back at the genetics of many of my plants, you see the same parents over and over again. Who knows but I never had this several years ago.

My 783, which also is not a new seed has had lots of females with seeds in the blossom, I don't think it's a very new thing.

these pumpkin genetics are so strained over the last several years its a wonder we dont see more wierd things
if we had a family tree like some of these seeds we might have lots of extra parts ( some welcome , some not )

These problems aren't new...it just appears that way with information passed much easier these days. I had a flat vine go 30" wide in '87..Gancarz had them in the early 80's. Len Stellpflug did a lot of messing around with seeds in the female blossom in the 80's as well when many plants were getting them. We've had twin pumpkins sharing a stem and 12 lobe flowers throughout the years. And we all know about the "Dill-ring"...a name that just caught on from talking with Howard when they started showing up early on.

Wierd. It kind of looks like a male flower with female lobes. Hmmm.
Its a hermaphroditikin... blossom.

I had an identical one on a much smaller scale. Great pic! Thanks for sharing. Subsequent males all normal...so far!
