Scott...Awesome job on protecting your plants from the hail. This sort of attention to detail should only help you break your 1030 best. I like seeing someone give Mother Nature a run for her money with this kind of work...a way to even up the score and not accepting what she decides to throw our way. Whatever happens the rest of the way, your safe in knowing you will have some very healthy plants with the potential for a big one...that's all we can hope for.

Very well done indeed. This may be something I have to do in the future.

I agree. I wish I had time to get some protection over my plants or they wouldn't be in such sorry shape.

I saw your diary and I just had to say you're one brave/crazy guy!! That curve you put in your main in ONE MOTION is unbelievable. I've just started putting curves in my plants and I'm as nervous as can be and taking it slow during the heat of the day. I wish I had the guts to try that! With my luck, it would snap right off in my hands.

Keep up the good work!

Brian

Thanks Alan.....im merely trying to follow in your footsteps. My shade cloth cant hold a candle to your water tank, or your wind protection for that matter.

and i really did that bend in one motion, i kid you not. I assure you, ive broken vines in the past attempting this though. This is not something you would do with those brittle 845 bobier vines!

Scott,

If you impress Nesbitt then you know you are hard core. I love watching the dedication you guys have and thanks for sharing it with the rest of us...we're not worthy!

I think I was in Stelts patch with you in 2002 when he was talking about the 90 degree turns he had in all his plants. I remember someone asking if he did it a little each day and he said no, just one big turn. It made me whince then and thinking about it now makes me whince again. I've snapped my share of vines doing it (add another to the list from yesterday) but I still think it's better than trying to reposition a pumpkin that's pressing on it's vine. What I want to know is how you guys get such a sharp right angle. I get more of a "curve" that probably should be called the Richey 70 instead of the Stelts 90.

Brent, yup, that was the tour. I think there were a couple of reasons i was able to get that kind of angle in it. first is the flexibility of the plant in general. Like my last post, doing this with an 845 Bobier would almost guarantee a "snap". this is an 846 Calai offspring. I grew a different 846 Offspring last year, and it was very flexible as well. The second reason i think is due to the lenght of the vine after the fruit. There must be 6-8 feet of vine after the fruit. I think the extra lenght may provide some extra leverage.

Dave Garrell nearly had me in fits a couple weeks ago as he bent my 845 Bobier cutting into a 90 degree turn. Son of a gun did it though & it didn't break. Bamboo stakes, broken tool handles, sticks & what-not all over the thing, but it worked!

I did a 90 degree turn a couple weeks ago and it worked just fine. It was on a 712.5Wells
