O.K. what do the people who grow the 700+lbrs do this time of year to improve their planting site? Besides a cover crop.

First, I have my soil analyzed, Then in additon to manure and leaves, I add gypsum. If necessary, I add lime as well.

I'd get it done as soon as your plants are pulled.

We are not to far away from being buried by snow, so I suggest throwing a bunch of leaves on and tilling them in ASAP. That way, the soil microbes get a head start on breaking down the leaf matter before they are frozen stiff. Stick with maple and poplar leaves. Shy away from Oak. If you had problems with bugs and weeds, get out the blow torch and fry the ground. Kills weed seeds and bug larvae.

Rainydays whats up? I improve my site's by building a nice big compost pile over my seed bed. Then after Halloween I carefully set my A.G over the seed bed, fill the pumpkin with rotted compost, and let it set all winter.
