Help! I have a split in a main vine about three feet from the stump that's rotten and oozing. Is there anything that I can do to help stave off any further problems? Charlie

Doesn't sound good. Rotten is definately not good. If you have other pumpkin plants, I'd yank it.

charlie sounds like a serious case of pithium or worse if you have other plants id rip this bad one out if its your only plant you can kiss the baby, say a prayer and cut the base out all the way down the infected vine until you reach good growth ----- as long as you have a main and sides the pumpkin although comprimised will still grow without the base
for eliminating future soil and/or plant diseases you should have an extensive soil sample done by robero labs of californis if not you will never know what is happening

pap, Thanks a lot for the advice. Unfortunately, I have only one other plant, and it has a major ribbon vine. The plant with the split, is a 1097.5 Beachy. It looks pretty healthy otherwise. I planted it on May 17, and it has a main vine about 22' with some secondaries at about 15'. I hate to lose it. This is the first year that I've grown in my patch for at least 6 years. I've had major disease problems in the patch previously (Phytophthora that I know for sure). I have three fruit set on the main so far. I guess I'll do what I can for awhile in addition to praying and hope for the best. If it eventually looks hopeless, I'll rip it out and start looking toward next year (Send samples to a reputable lab, maybe fumigate soil, start soil prep, etc.). Any other advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. (BTW, I sent you a message privately, but I got a message back saying that your server did not accept the message.)
