This has been a year with unique challenges for me. I set up a new sattelite patch last month and ended up planting 5 plants in "mystery virgin" soil. Based on a soil test I did when I moved to the area, I am guessing that there is NO nitrogen in the new patch, but high amounts of P&K, so I amended with composted manure.
I knew I would have problems when I started, now I am identifying them. I have five ***2'-3' vines*** growing slow and straight out of the ground (like trees), with zillions of BIG male flowers glowing/growing out (you can spot them from 100 yards).
I'm guessing I should put some organic-based nitrogen into the ground, like bloodmeal. Good Idea / bad idea?
Any other ideas? HELP!

Toby...it doesn't sound like it'll hurt anything at this point. But you may want to try something foliar for a quicker, immediate effect. I like Ironite for a quick boost.

I used Bloodmeal in my organic patch this year.
It provides the plant a nice quick hit of nitrogen.
I gave two applications, *lightly* scratched in w/ a rake and then watered in.
Same rules apply to using synthetic N though. This stuff works just as quick. First application I saw a big surge, second was much easier on the plant. Try not to overdo it.
I'll use again next year.

Yep. Guess it won't hurt at this point. Ok, I'll try both foliar, and lite rake. Thanks for the help, you both have given me that "step away and look at it again" perspective I sorta need.
Now I know why people get wierd when they sell their homes. (I'm a first-time home seller)

I used bloodmeal this Spring as well, and have 2 bags ready to apply as soon as I get a few last pollinations done. I wasn't aware it worked that fast, this is my first year for ever using *only* organic based soil amendments. No bagged synthetic fert for me this year...feels strange too. Thanks Ceis, I have wondered how quickly bloodmeal actually worked.
