Probably 90% of a pumpkin's weight gain happens in the first 80 days after pollination. If you have a copy of How to Gtow Giant Pumpkins III there is a chart showing the growth by date of Don Langevin's 953.

Steve,
I don't remember the day I pollinated, but I planted my seeds last year in the middle of June and the plants in the garden July 1st. I harvested the new Ga. record of 698 on Oct. the 30th. I don't think it gained much weight during the month of Oct. I also picked a 427 lber. that day also on a different plant. I believe our average first frost is the middle of Oct. The year before I didn't plant my seeds until July the 5th. and the plants in the garden July the 18th. That year my largest was 423. I just planted 3 plants in the garden today for this year. They are around 2 weeks old. So you should be able to get a nice one.
Good luck,
One Dude

Steve, I started some plants for my grandma to grow, and they are just going into the ground at her house later tonight from 4 1/2 inch pots. I will be helping her take care of them, so you and me can see what we can get out of our late plants together. :-)

Steve, our climate is very different here in colo., and you have to improvise every chance you get, as we are the high altitude growers of pumpkins and things can be very dificult and different due to the climate here, of which I am 1000 ft. higher than where you are at, AS I SIT AT JUST ABOVE 6000 FT.and life can be bad for growing here, and very challenging. Here is a post I did previously on this subject of of beginner/ setting a late fruit... Back in the mid 1990's I started a plant about now on the summer solstice, and did not pollinate until August 9th. I did not bury vines nor prune the plant which was only grown in 150 sq. ft. with very poor soil, but yet I managed to pull off a 242 lbr. that looked like it weighed 400lbs. due to it's size and pretty color & measurements..It had everyone at our local weigh off worried, and I made a place for myself among the local/state collection of the few growers here in colorado. This is also the pumpkin that taught me a very big lesson that year and got me sold on the sport of growing the big ones, even though I had grown them for a few years before I did this fruit. Here in colorado it is definately the school of hard growing, as you must learn every step of the way, storm to storm, freeze to freeze, and working your soil, inhailing the horse s--t till your nostrils are black and tasting it also in your throat, which means a taste for the big one.....Just a word of advice...James Kane..

Steve, My 3 largest pumpkins the last 2 years (648,509,497) were pollinated between July 27 & Aug 1. Since you are 1 state south of me, I would think you still have a chance of 500 or better if you pollinate by the first week in Aug.
