Okay, the battle lines have been drawn at my house. My wife is angry the lawn has become infiltrated with clover for the first time ever. I know the product to kill clover is 2-4-D, and I refuse to use it, as it will also level the pumpkins. She has threatened me with the us or the pumpkins line. Her fear is bees going to clover, and not being able to go barefoot in the lawn all summer long.

My question is this, is there any product or remedy other than 2-4-D that can kill clover? Has anyone ever used the second step of Bayer weed killer or used the Bayer weed control product and not had it affect the pumpkins? I am desperate here. Any advice to an alternate to the 2-4-D enhanced products would be greatly appreciated.

Why do you want to kill the clover is my question? When everyone elses yards are going dormant and brown in the heat. Mine will still be green, why? Mine is clover and bluegrass mix. The clover also will choke out the dandelions and other undesirible weeds. A lawn with clover also never needs to be fertilized. If you really want to kill it set your mower to its lowest setting, and cut it close to the ground,

She is afraid the kids will be stepping on bees all summer long. She is home during the summer (school teacher) and thinks she will be treating bee stings during this time.

Tell her to teach them the saying "SEE A BEE LET IT BE" .Those honey bees have no interest in those kids. Now hornets and wasps are another situation.

Send me a private email with your address. I have some Fluroxypyr samples from DOW AgroSciences. Trade named spotlight, it is purported to be the best on Clover. We need to talk about the proper delivery method since this isn't any Garden Center material & would be every bit as fatal to a pumpkin as 2,4-D if it isn't applied correctly. But it is non-volatile & won't hurt what it doesn't directly touch.

It is not registered in all states yet, but PA is clear.

Rocky, try a paint roller with a long handle and roll it on like painting a wall (no spray) that is how I put on round-up in areas that I do not want any over spray
Good luck Gene

My lawn is about 35% weed 65% grass. This is better than it was last year, but I just don't want to spend money on the lawn when I live in the country and don't belong to a home asociation that demands perfect grass. Doesn't matter anyhow, because I mow my "weeds" so regularly, it looks just like a lawn, feels just like a lawn, smells like a lawn... I call it a lawn.

I have discovered that when clover flowers, the bees show up. If I set the blade lower on the mower, it chopps off the flowers, and the bees go away. I still have clover. I NEVER fertilize; I only mow and water. Occasionally, I spread Sevin over it, when the bugs start taking over, but that's all. When I moved in, there was absolutely no landscaping, just red clay mud. Now there's grass and I only spread seed once, over a year ago.

Do like me... mow it low, water it and go! :-D

I like the RoundUp and paint roller idea!
And my yard looks like yours Toby...lots-o-weeds and clover. Us hillbillys in the Appalachian Mtns. run around our yard naked and barefoot..since this is hillbilly country and all, we gotta keep up with our stereotype..and we never get stung.
If you step on one that usually means it squashed and dead, right?

Set your sprayer at a lower pressure, use spray tips that produce larger drops, and spray when there is just enough breeze to carry any drift away from you pumpkins. (watch the wifes flowers) Remember to spray next year before your pumpkins are in the field. And tell the kids that you just got a little sting the poor bee died... Ha Ha (I get stung a lot because I have 2 bee hives.) Fun Hobby

Good Luck from Ohio....

Roundup is deactivated upon contact with soil. So the paint roller won't work very well on bare ground after the first few revolutions. But this & other "wick applicators" are very good ways to elimate drift. Especially if using a 2,4-D selective herbicide on turf near sensitive plants. Good idea.
