Subject:  smelly soil

I think i have overwatered for the past few days and the soil around the stump smells like bad feet. plant and stump show no signs of damage. growth is still strong on plant. i haven't watered since yesterday afternoon. second year growing and would like some advice. thanks.

Keep your shoes on in the garden.........OK that's a joke. I really haven't encountered this one before. I think you're probably going the right direction by backing off on the water a bit. Let the soil dry up a little and see if that doesn't impove things. If the plant starts to droop, go back to watering. The main thing is to make sure that you stay on an even keel with the moisture. Don't soak and then parch. This is especially important when you have fruit set, but there's no need to stress the plant that way at any time.

yo, Mine Stinks too when it gets really damp, i think its the pig poop i added 6 months before i planted.

How do the plants look? It sounds like anaerobic bacteria are working. Not usually a good thing. But it doesn't mean the end of the world either. Moderating moisture should help. Let things get a little dry. I've found if soils run a little low in pH, then a sprinkling of Lime watered in helps freshen things up. Not so if soils are alread high pH.

Try a adding some oxygen to the soil with a solution of .03 percent peroxide. Take two gallons water add one quart peroxide. Calcium Peroxide would do the trick if it is available in your area.

thanks everyone. i might give the peroxide a try. i checked this morning and the smell is gone. gonna let it dry for another day. i know the problem is i switched from drippers to flag drippers.. way more water.. doooohhh.. but its looking good now..
