Does anyone else keep a detailed diary of your pumpkin and/or gardening stuff? I have a day planner that I use only for gardening and pumpkin stuff. I noticed Jerry Rose flipping through the same sort of thing during his schpeel at Niagara Falls. I was just wondering what everyone else uses, because I just put the basics in my "pumpkin diary" on this website, and use the day planner for all the details like planting, flowering, fertilizers etc. of all my plants (not just pumpkins). I also try to write in the daily weather if I think of it.

Excel spread sheet. Two entries per day.
Date/Days since germ/Low & High Temp/Rainfall/Length of day/Current GDDs/Notes such as ferts, sprays, length of vines,etc/misc. Pollination data later.
More of a log than a diary. Just cold data. No real thoughts.

i no longer doodle at down times at work, i am now a LISTER. i make lists of work to do in the long run and the short run. luckily i might accomplish 6 out of 10 of the daily list each day. i have a checklist for bug spraying and fungicides, and also my fertigation schedule in my wallet on the back of a burger king receipt,, for the entire season, and i will check it off one by one. i do not believe this consists of a journal Brigitte, but i do believe it means i am a lister. by the way, that burger king order was 2 whoppers with cheese, please. let that flamingo flap her wings this season, best of luck, shazzy

side note, i have no business being up this late when i have to pollinate in the morning. i blame it all on bobby and the thurs nite college crowd at bobby's tap let alone the free shots.
my list starts in 5 hours, number one being, "get it together man, for the love all that is holy and good." blah blah blah. pumpkin schmumpkin. seriously, go to a college bookstore and get a jounalism flip notebook for about 3 bucks. they might have them at office max or a similar office store. they are great for ideas on the fly. i too use this site for all pumpkin data that i need to record besides my longwinded posts. anything that you can go back to year by year for bug arrival, blossum times, etc. is great unless you have a photographic memory and do not require a journal to fall back on. i do not have that luxury.

Brigitte, Why don't you just print out your bp diary at the end of the year and drive on as you are doing...? That's what I plan on doing. Michel

I have a detailed excel spreadsheet that I've modified and expanded on from the one I believe Brent was offering. I've kept as much detail in it as I can daily including description of days pumpkin activities, milestones, watering, growth, etc. An example of my diary can be seen at http://www.mainepumpkins.com/grodiary.html. No guarantee's on the link, running a server off dial-up is pretty painful.

I make notes on the calendar of watering and rainfall amounts, date of fertilizing(both root/foliar) and most importantly Insecticide/Fugicide applications. I always find myself looking back to see when I last sprayed something and if its is due again. I also record SVB/Cuke Beatles sightings/kills. Pollination dates and growth measurements of the pumpkins.
Looking back at last year, I was 3 weeks behind. This year I'm right on track.

I use Excel and entry once a week that has formulas that calculate the weight and puts it to a bar chart and have a space where you can type in notes like what you did to the plant or how the weather was that week ect. Todd

I get one of those HUGE desk calendars that have those big boxes for scribbling notes in each day. There i track my fertilzer applications, important events, and daily weight gains, etc. They are great for keeping notes.

I use an Excel file as well with printed sheets I take out to the patch. I record most things once the fruit start to come then update once or twice a week on the computer.

I keep mine on Word, I don’t enter into it ever day but I try to, I figured since this is my first year I can learn what I did wrong and what I did right. And I figure it will give me something to do from time to time in the winter to get me jacked for the following spring. It only takes a few minutes. Scott
