i can olny grow two pants...and currently have 4 growing. i have in one patch, 766 davies 620 boyton in the other patch i have, 208 little 920 boyton my question is which one would you keep and which one would you cull? keep in mind i am looking for shape and color, then size. i am not growing for competion so those extra few pounds ownt matter to me. My goal would be something in the 400 pound range seeing as i am a first time grower. thankx for the help!

Jesse,
The 766 was a deep dark orange with a nice blocky symetrical shape. Steve pollinated his 803.4 with the 845 Bobier which generally isn't dark. But then his 803.4 came from ther 845 so I suppose the color is from the 922.5 Emmons? But it wasn't dark either so......I hate genetic questions.
Ben's 620 was lighter & also pollinated with the 845 Bobier.
For color, if it was me, I'd stick with the 766.
I don't know the other two at all. Are you sure it isn't a 950.4 Boyton?

I think Kyle grew the 208 specifically for beauty. It would be VERY cool to see what the 208 Little can produce.

I would definitely grow the 208 little. I have a few of them in just for "perfect" fruit. That is exactly what Kyle bread it for. The 208 Little was grown on the 120 Frantz which was 139.8 (big max) X 922.5 Emmons. As you can see, i have a vested interest in this seed.... LOL! You can see a pic of the 139.8 in my 2001 diary. Then you can see what the big max genetics bring to the table. I plan to cross the 208 Little with the 869.5 Calai to maintain its shape and color but give it more size. Did you see the 208 Little, it was awesome! Mike Frantz

I'm a little biased but the 208 would serve you well for color and great shape. It was grown for color, and crossed with a 940 Mombert '98 that was almost red..(the 940 has also grown a 1000+'er) It should produce great color and in the 400-500# range, more if cared for properly. I'm growing it this year, so are several others, and if you'd like to see pics of it and it's pollinator, just e-mail me and I'll send 'em. (Steve...whaddya mean you don't know that seed at all?)

PS...the 940 Mombert pollinator for the 208, was also the pollinator for the 922.5 Emmons...which was the pollinator for the 120 Frantz. What this means is that there is a very high probablity of the 208 producing stable, consistent fruit. The seed should put out great color and shape, time after time after time. This was a specifically planned cross just for that reasoning.

I have some 208 Little seeds, but I am wondering if anybody is selfing them? It would be fun to plant a patch with a few of them and let multiple fruit grow on the vines (4-6) so you have a bunch of perfect 100 pounders to give to friends for halloween.
I actually have room in my patch for one more plant. it would be late, but I could keep one on the vine into November so it matures. Then I could have selfed seed for next year...

Joey, keep them all,,lol (just kidding), I planted my back ups and kinda wish i wouldnt have now, 5 plants for a first time grower keeps u real buzy , I had no idea it would be that much work, next year 2 or 3 plants is enough.
(message to wife and family,,, i miss you and i will be home in october, tell everyone i said hi)

Sly - You have just admitted to one of the most common mistakes by a first time grower.
Having 2 or 3 well cared-for plants is usually better than 5 moderately cared for plants.
If you got the time go for it.

OK! I got the 208 seedlings in the ground today! I was only expecting to put one in the patch, but I over-watered a couple melon plants, so I had permanent space for the back-up seedling. In my diary I said I was going to let the bees pollinate these plants, but I changed my mind and I think I will plan to have one plant with a "selfed" pumpkin, and another with a "sibbed" pumpkin. No culls on these plants, unless they are too close to the base of the vine.
wish me luck!
