I have read that several growers stated that some of their vines are growing straight up. Mine went along the ground for 29 inches then decided to grow straight up. It is at about a 40 degree angle and is about 24 inches long. Is this normal? If not how can I train it to return to the ground?

Is that how people explain things? Only if you tell me then I will tell you? If it was just for me I would not do it but because the pumpkin belongs to my son then I will explain. Email is on the way. Happy that you did this to a 13 y.o. boy?

Better make that 2 emails. My Scouts would enjoy some brewing.
That vine is demonstarting pleasure. Not THAT kind!. It's in a growth mode. It probably has some 723 or 845 in it. They like to stand up. They like to snap too. So let the main down very gently. The heat of midday will help. But don't overdo it. I've seen mains pushed in the heat that turn around & snap when cool night air or an irrigation cycle turned the main stiff again & SNAP! The second worst sound there is.

Last year one of the plants that I grew was a "reacher".
the main and all of the secondaries all would grow upwards for 18 to 20 inches - then gradually lay down. This adds for more maintance - use crossed bamboo stakes for additional support

Ceis,I guess this happens frequently. I have read about others using the crossed bamboo stakes. Thanks for the info. I will give it a try.

Yeah,Yeah, Yeah, You guys kept talking about that snap sound...Well I heard it yesterday. Yeah, that is a pretty sick sound, Still trying to get over it. I gave it first aid, but find myself wondering what I could have done to keep my baby from this terrible fate. It makes you feel like a bad parent. I keep looking over my shoulder for social services to roll up the drive to take my plant to a foster home. Oh, the shame of it all.

blkcloud most of the time I purchase the rootbeer concentrate at the same place I purchase my homemade wine supplies. However, this last time we bought it in a local grocery store near the other extracts in the spice section of that store. Other stores may have it in another place. You could always ask if they have it, wherever you do your grocery shopping.

There are a number of sources for soda pop concentrates. If they are not available locally, a good source is www.ebrew.com That is where I get most of my beer, wine and soda supplies. The sarsparilla is real good Too. Course I make more beer than soda.

I initially wanted to make my own beer but when I was doing research on the internet, my kids were peeking over my shoulder and they saw a site about making rootbeer so the beer idea never went any farther. We do however make our own wine. Most of it pretty good some of it not, but a few were exceptional. Last year we came in second place for our blueberry wine. This year we made an exceptional pear wine. We may enter that and see what happens. We never tried to make sasparilla. Maybe give it a try. If anyone wants a very good site about winemaking go to http://winemaking.jackkeller.net/ We make more wine than soda but both are equally good.
