I saw a picture of taht last year from someone here. I just can't find it now.
First guess: Sclerotinia Stem Rot - Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Is the white stuff kind of stringy?

I never really stuck my finger in the white stuff but it didnt appear to be stringy,sorta foamy...what ever it is has killed 3 plants so far..

Cloud - probably better that you didn't touch 'em.
That black thumb of yours could be contagious.

I never found out what it was, but it was the end of the plant. I pulled the plant early, and did not have any problems with the remaining plants in my patch.

i cant help but think that the mulching from the old wheat straw had something to do with it..all the plants i mulched met the same end..i actually wanted to mulch all of my plants that evening but ran out of daylight..
