I fine resolution indeed. So far so good here. But when the secondaries get tight, even the scuffle hoe gets tight.

My home patch is absolutely weed free. I get good results by covering the patch very early in the season with remay and this usually helps the weed seeds to germinate long before the pumpkin get going. Then it's just a matter of of lightly cultivating with the back of a rake every few days around the plant.
The test patch is a whole different ballgame though... There I have 4 meters between the rows and use a garden tiller between them as often as needed but this probably kills a lot of pumpkin roots...
