Main vine on the 658 Wolf is going skyward. It is about 2+ feet and climbing. Still inside it's wind protection. I'm thinking of placing a stake a few feet away and attaching my wife's pantyhose to the stake and the vine. Gently pulling, but still giving it some slack. Any other opinions?....Tom

i wouldnt recommed forcing it down. the vine give no warning before a crack. i would place bamboo in an X shape above and below to gently assist the vine down. as it grows the weight of it will bring it down. you dont want that to happen all at once, or risk the wind catching it. you need to brace it to protect it.

Both my 620 Boyton and my 1178 Wentzell plants are growing straight upward and i dont like it. the 620 is starting to lean so on tuesday i gave it some help with the X up and down bamboo pattern at least this way it cant go straight up and yet at the same time it has support so it dont give and SNAP!!. Tomouro i'll be mounding up some dirt so the vine cane gradually come down the mound till the level ground i am hopeing this helps.

You've got several months, don't push it or you might regret it. It'll come down, they always do.

My 620 Boyton was doing the exact samething. I had to cut a leaf off near the stump that was keeping the main up. A day later it came down with no problems. I didn't like cutting off the leaf but did not want to take a chance on the main being toast. See if you anything that you can prume that would help you bring down the main. Either way something was going to be cut because the main was getting large and all the pressure of the plant was on one leaf. Jeff

Tom, I had that problem last year with my 845 Bobier. That sucker would try to hold 3' of vine up in the air, it was so high that normal bamboo sticks wouldn't reach it so I went to Lowes & got thin dowel rods & placed the crosses under the vine high up & as the vine would come down I would slowely spread the dowel rods apart & let it go to the ground. You may have to place the dowel crosses on all four sides of the vine sticking straight up, but paying out $6 bucks in dowel rods is better than losing a good plant............Paul

I'm with Gordon... GO UTES!

And just think, if it never comes down, you can sell
the seeds as the first "pumpkin tree"... (bad joke, sorry)

This plant must be all ready trained for the Christmas tree pruning. Vertical that is. Thanks for all the info! Will try the dowels above and below. It is now at 3-1/2 feet.

pap thats a good idea if the bra is a big one, but for the cost of bras now adays I would have to keep my bra for myself :)

Now I know why my 650 Paynter looks so different...it is growing straight up! It never occured to me that that might be a problem..duh...I just kept thinking it would lay down in time. It is over a foot high at the moment. Tomorrow I will have to check it out for leaves interfering under it. Thanks for bringing this topic up...it just never occured to me to be concerned.
