We bury onlt the secondary vines here plus the portion of the main where the secondaries are. I think it is wise to wait to bury those parts of the main until the secondary vines are established.

You will probably get different responses from a lot of people. Here are some of the advantages: the plants will grow a root at each node (where the leave stalk attaches to the vine) the vine is secured in the ground if it's windy there's a reduced chance of Squash vine Borers getting in
a disadvantage... the vines can rot underground, especially if your soil is wet or doesn't drain well

Loot - most of the growers here in the PNW bury all their vines. We look for the added support of the auxilary root system of the secondaries.
Be careful about over watering if you are in heavy clay.
We are blessed with not having to worry about the SVB.

Bury ALL my vines completely, soil drys between waterings. Stop burying vines @ 2 to 4 nodes before pumpkin set to curve your vine. 2 to 4 nodes after pumpkin set I begin burying the vines again.

I think I have heard many versions and ideas on this. People with SVB's tend to bury the vines and many with out SVB's avoid it ....Brig is right on when she sez... soil, bugs, drainage etc. will determine what is best for your patch...first year growers while many are successful will be far better off the second try once the have the lay of their land and the soil right.Grow Em Big...
