Put up some wind breakes A.S.A.P. dont let the wind do you in...I have 3 foot silt fence all the way around the patch for such events...good luck

Buddy, Does that silt fence work pretty well? I regularly get winds in excess of 20 mph here and have absolutely no wind protection for the plants other than their greenhouses right now. How large an area does a height of 3 feet protect?

I got wind breaks. just making sure they don't fail. I say with out them my plants have about a 5sec life span.
Thanks!

Brian - I'd definately recommend some since your up on a hill. Especially when your hot houses come off.
I basically surround my plants - the breaks are set a little close now but will be moved back as the secondaries advance.
I think Home Depot sells a roll for $29.

I just bought a role or 3mil clear plastic(10' X 20') from a local Fleet Farm store for around $3.00. I figure I can cut strips 3-4' high, and if I need more than 20' for around it, I can tape pieces together.

I live in the woods so I'm somewhat protected, but it was windy the other day and I'm going out of town soon, so there are stakes all over my plants. It looks sorda silly, but is working until burying starts.

Thanks for the info CEIS. I'll have to check out Home Depot tomorrow. The 801 can only stand another day or so in the cold frame.
You're right about the hill. We get more wind up here than any pumpkin grower should have to endure. The sunny side of the house is also the windy side so it's a lose-lose situation no matter where the patch is. I'm concerned that 3-4 feet might not be enough to keep the wind at bay. For now, the silt fence will have to do.
Perhaps a Nesbitt type wall would be in order? 8 feet would do it!

I'm with Gordon... GO UTES!

Yes, do use the silt fence, and put it up before the cloches come down!
What I used last year in addition is a bunch of straw bales, stacked strategically around the patch. This year I'm having all sorts of problems finding them. Within a few days, my 1005 Mombert will be coming out of the hoophouse and I can't find any straw bales!!! Argh!
