One of my AG's main vine broke. The vine had not layed down when I went to work this morning. But when I got back this afternoon it broke about 1ft out from the base of the plant. The vine in all is about 3-4ft. I think it broke due to the weight of the vine. The hole in the vine is on the top of the vine and about 2" long and about 1" wide. The break is only on top, the bottom is in good intact shape. Can I plug it up with something? Help! It is mt best plant. The AG next to the broke one, is not "layed down yet, how can I prevent it from breaking until it is on the ground?

Either mound soil under the vine or support with crosed stakes and lower gently to the ground over a period of days. If the split in the vine is lenghtways its best to dust with fungicide and cover to stop critters entering. If it is across the vine then it may be doomed.

Sounds to me like your main is toast.

You will need to train the next available secondary (if there is one) as your replacement main.

If not there should be another growt tip that will emerge from one of the leaf junctions at the base of the plant. You can use this as you new main.

Good Luck

My 1064 Needham which grew my 785/646 2 years ago did the same thing,it's break left little flesh left to be attached to. I buried it over with dirt, cussed at it and told it that if it kept acting up like that and being sucidal, then next time I'd just let it off itself. The plant turned out to be a good listener.
If the plant is vigorius enough, it will do whatever it has to so it fixes itself. If not, don't worry as it usually favores one of the sides, pouring all energy into it. That one will then act like your main. Either way, don't panic yet... go cuss it out and have a talk with it. It might listen to you.

Cheese, I've also had this happen and its not uncommon. I always just bury it in dirt. Hit it with extra root solution for a week instead of nitrogen, and then, depending on what's happening with the plant, things turn out good or the next secondary will take over quickly.

i would just keep feeding it and leave it alone and see what happens. Don't give up. I had one break two years ago and it started a new main by one of the secondarys if there is one still on the main
