Sure does seem to be alot of this going on..My main has split length of main between stump and fruit...Inspected today,,and its completley severed in middle between fruit and stump..My question is this,,what causes a vine to split besides stress?? Can too much water cause? Reason I ask is my secondaries are starting to split also and theres no stress on them..We have had maybe 2-3" of rain in past week..Thanks in advance for your help.. J

It can be many things, but mainly excessive rain or fertilizer will cause it. Or it may be genetic, my 845 Bobier last year was extremly brittle & split & snapped all the time......Paul

Hi Paul,,so let me ask away,,havent added no ferts this year,,before or after fruit set...Soil test showed some high points,,and I probably over did the 0-0-60 last year...MAybe my clay soil isnt draining -leaching out enough??At first thought it was stress,,but now I am really puzzled..Not leaning towards genetics.. I had my plants held down with stakes and I still got a split. I think the wind, combined with gravity, made a leaf fall towards the ground, rotating the main vine and causing the split-causing stress on it. Just a thought. Ya can't protect em from everything unless you keep your seeds sitting in the house.

This year we had a leaf that was causing wind stress & was threatening to split the main. Several bamboo sticks held the leaf stalks on the prone plant at bay. That was until a good blow broke a leaf stalk instead. But I'll take broken leaves over a broken main any day.
