I have a plant with the main vine split about 12" from where it emerges from the ground. The plant looks beautiful and is still growing as if nothing has happened. The split is about 2 - 3" long and standing wide open (at least 1/2"). I think it happened while being tossed about during a thunderstorm. My concern is bugs finding a great place to live inside the vine. Do I patch it? If so, how? Do I just bury it and hope for the best? Thanks in advance for any helpful advice you can offer.

I found the same thing on one of my plants this morning. If you are concerned, I would treat it with a fungicide, then keep an eye on it until it dries. Then go ahead and bury it if you bury your vines. Eventually it will heal and it may get a little knarly looking, but it should be OK.

Do you know about graftage- the technique in which the separate parts of one or more plants are caused to grow together as one plant. Usually an elastic tape is used to keep the parts attached. I´m using that kind of tape to heal vine splits for years and it works fine. After applying the tape, you can still use sulphur or a fungicide to "quarantine" the split area.

Just wanted to add a link to my last post, or just do a google search for "parafilm". Seems to be a pretty common product for all uses of sealing and attaching. http://www.modernbio.com/parafilm.htm
