The leaves on our pumpkin plant must be being eaten by some kind of insect but whenever I look I never see anything there. in the middle of the leaf, it looks like it was cut or torn but it is in several places on each of the leaves. I am believing that it must be something that is eating at the leaves. Could anyone help onwhat treatment should be used? Will this endanger the plant ot the pumpkin?

Slugs work at night. Have you seen the tell tale slime trails? You might trap slugs in shallow saucers of stale beer buried to the rim in late afternoon. Find them floating in it the next morning.

Watch also for the elusive & dreaded Cucumber Beetle. CB's vector Bacterial Wilt as well as reducing the plants energy by feeding.

see:

Identify & treat appropriately ASAP.

Cuts & tears are often caused by wind or hail. Also, if you've been trimming near the garden with a weed wacker, then that's almost a good bet to be the cause. Damage from these sometimes takes a day to become noticable.

As Tremor suggested, slugs work at night and will leave behind slime trails. Cucumber beetles forage on the leaves too, but they're usually quite noticable during the day.

Thanks guys, it is much appreciated. I am not a pro nor do I claim to know anything about this. It is my son that is growing the pumpkin and he knows more than I do. I would probably lean toward the wind factor more than anything else. All were very good suggestions. I know you cannot tell what it is without actually seeing it. I will keep a lookout for all of the possible problems now that I know what to look for. Thanks again. Good luck to all.

blkcloud and Mr. Bumpy, yes we make our own rootbeer. Actually it is my two sons that make it. It is an easy process that takes about 15 minutes to make and then wait a week for it to brew. That is all. We love to share so belly up to the bar and enjoy a delicious frosted mug of rootbeer. PS it is awesome when you make rootbeer floats.

i bought a beer making kit one time but you had to be in a sterile hospital operating room to brew it...so i tried the cola syrup that came with it and boy..it has a funky taste..kinda like a old stale flat double cola..do y'all remember double colas??

blkcloud - I brew beer on a weekly (or so) basis and have for years. I don't have anything that resembles a hospital here. Brewing outstanding beers, sodas and wines can be achieved in the average home with little trouble and is a fascinating hobby. Give it another try.

Sure try it Blkcloud, My Dad used to brew beer all the time, wish I had not lost the recipe, All I remember is that he used a brand of malt called Blue Ribbon, My Uncle and him used the malt cans, customized with a handle, for mugs! Strong Stuff! They brewed it up in the tool shed/ chicken coop, sterile? All I remember about that is..."keep your hands off and don't knock the cheese cloth cover into the batch" LOL

blkcloud and Mr. Bumpy, I would like to share the rootbeer recipe with you or anyone else that would be interested. I do not want to take up space on the messageboard, so I will have to email it to the both of you if you do not mind. It may take a day or two for me to do it so please be patient.
