started pumpkins inside they got very tall and spindly can I bury stem up to leaves without hurting anything?

I had the same problem when we went through our 12 straight days of rain here...many seedlings grew 6 inches or more. Bury them right up to their ears, and they may even throw roots out the side of the buried stem.
