I received two packages of pumpkin seeds in the mail and decided, "what the heck" I'll grow some pumpkins. Before educating myself about growing pumpkins, I dug a couple of holes, dumped a packet of seeds into each hole and starting watering. Well, I have lots of little sprouts. My question is: will I shock the sprouts if I transplant them, or do I simply need to pull all but two of three out of the mound and discard? I really had no idea about planting and the mounds are about a foot apart, as opposed to the recommended 10 feet. Can someone help me, please. I really do want a pumpkin patch this fall.

Hey Mrs. T.....what kind of pumpking seed did you plant? How big is your patch? How are the seed spots located in your patch?
Never fear....Lots of we folks started somewhat the way you just did. My first year was a single Big Max that roared into the world under fifty pounds.
Give us a little more information. We will try to help you finish the season with something you may call your first pumpkin. Getting the first one is how we all started.

Welcome Mrs T.
Depending on the seed variety I would recommend to cull down to a few seedlings per hole or hill.
Even though your holes are only a foot apart you can grow the vines in different directions
Please note - There is a Mr. T on the site...however he is in the Bahamas.

I would not PULL out the extras that you don't want to grow. I would take a scissors, and snip them off at the dirt level. That way, you won't disturb the roots of the ones that you are leaving there to grow.
A foot apart is pretty close, even if you are growing smaller sized pumpkins. To get better growth, I would snip off plants until each mound is 2 or 3 feet apart. If it was me, I would rather have a few bigger, healthier plants, rather than a lot of small, crowded plants.
~ Good Luck ~

Thanks for all the information. I saw where Mr. T posted, that's how I came up with Mrs. T. -- sorry, not very original. I live on 10 acres with about 3 acres available for a patch. To be honest with you, I have no idea what kind of seeds they were. It was something I received in the mail. I dug two holes and dumped a packet of seeds into each hole. I've never grown anything before so I really figured they wouldn't grow ~~smile~~. I just spoke with a master gardner at a local nursery. She suggested I water them, then when the temperature is below 70, very gently dig them up and weed out the smaller ones, then replant another mound about 3 feet away.

well blow me over i hope my wife here in the bahamas doesn't find out our little secret LOL. well Mrs T. if the seeds that you put in the ground were larger than a quater then they might be giants in which case you'll want to cut them all off but one like Brigitte's style. but if they were quarter size or smaller then i would leave one in each area and transplant one out that will not disturb the roots of the one you leave. they say that imitation is the highest form of flattery. thanks

Mrs. T....Welcome from the Kahuna. Look, watch and listen before you cross into your pumpkin patch. BP.com is an excellent resource for not only pumpkins but general gardening. Many here help out on a daily basis. Climb on the pumpkin vine train, Just like the Hotel California you can never leave....................

All of you are so friendly!! Yes, I'm happily married ~~smile~~ The seeds were smaller than a quarter. I'll thin them out (somehow) and see what happens. I'm very excited. Autumn is my favorite time of the year and I dearly love pumpkins! I've taken my 5 year old to a couple of pumpkin patches in the years past. Hopefully, we'll have our own this fall. Thanks for everything!!
