I noticed I have a split in my main vine. We’ve had a lot of rain so I imagine that has something to do with it. I have heavy clay soil so I’m not super keen on vine burying. I’ve been gently burying only the tap roots as I see them form. I worry about rot. Should I go ahead and bury the split portion of the vine? My question boils down to is it riskier to bury it or leave it open? It’s about a 2 inch long split. This is only my second year growing so I’m open to and appreciate any advice.

Keep it dry by putting some sort of shield over it. It could be as simple as a laundry basket with a rock on to of it to hold it down

Do not bury the vine. Try to keep it dry like Big Moon said. The split will heal itself. Some guys use a 2 liter soda bottle cut in half placed over the top of split to keep water out and let a little air go thru. Been there done that with good results.

Do not bury the split part and even give it some buffer area before and after. I like to put some Daconil over the split (thin coat), and keep a fan on it for days. Use tall bamboo to peg and angle leaves away from Split so gets FULL SUN or expose the spot. The full sun will help it dry up and scar over. That's what you want.
The first week or so is critical to keep dry and get to scar over. I also shield it when rains so no water gets in.

That is all helpful information. I’ll use all of this advice. I didn’t know the split would fix itself, I thought I was more or less doomed. Thanks!
