3 of 4 of my mains have splits within 5 inches of the base. It seems to be related to where the main "layed over" or where one of the large orginal leaves have leaned over under their own weight. the splits are typically across the vine (as opposed to parallel to the lengh.) Some are pretty big. They are healing slowly. Should I "patch" these with anything. How big of a problem is this? Is this related to over-fertilization

Pumpkinhill, It is caused by fast growth and a lot of water available to the plant You need to try and obtain slower harder growth try to keep the ground evenly moist rather than a dry/wet cycle and use a high potash fertiliser the salt level will slow down growth.I don't do anything to my splits I don't know what you have in the way of backups if you try cutting off the main at a split and growing on a secondary there is a very good chance that all that pressure going into a small young growth will cause that to fail as well so you may have to go with what you have and hope for the best good luck.
