I dont know which pumpkin to take to weigh-off. Please look at the pictures I posted in my diary and please let me know which looks better for weigh-off. Thanks a lot everyone.

Hey Brian C. I have never been to a weigh-off before. How do I go about entering one as exhibition?

Me niether. But most of rules that I have read say that you can enter one for competition and a second one for show only. I'd show up with both and see what happens. If nothing else you'll be able to get an "official" weight. Contact the organizers of the weighoff you are going to and ask them.

If it is a large weigh-off the "take two" approach just doesn't work. Imagine if all 100+ entries at Topsfield last year was doubled!! Try to find someone in your area with a farm scale and weigh both ahead of time. Then take the heavy one. I have often seen "smaller" pumpkin out weigh bigger ones. Last year at the Durham Fair my pumpkin was physically the biggest but one weighed more than mine. If you can't find a scale try and rig some sort of see-saw and put a pumpkin on each end. This won't tell you the weight but it will tell you which is heavier.

Many contests will allow you to enter two pumpkins...one under your name, one in the name of your wife/husband .The theory is that although he/she didn't actually actively grow the thing, they helped to a point where a second could be considered "made possible" by the helper. I know I should be doing other things than playing with the pumpkin at times...my wife has made this possible by cutting the lawn insted of me. She has run out and pollinated for me while Im at work...covered the pumpkin in emergencies, reset the windbreak when it blew down, and turns the hose off at agreed upon times..A husband may have designed the timer for the grower...built the sunhut, hauled the manure....all vital cogs in the wheel. You may not ,however, get two money prizes....it all depends on the rules at where you go. Bring it.Enter it if possible.Ive only once had a hard time getting an exhibition pumpkin weighed....and I haven't been back since................G

Take both, if you don't want to take the one that has a big stem end, the flesh is thicker there so it will wiegh more than one with a big stem end of the same size. Good luck,
Tom

does a lot of cantaloping make a difference? Cruella has much more than Nala.

yes I noticed that, Cruella will probably wiegh more, I had allready posted when I looked. It has nice shape too. I;m sorry to say that my big one on the 478 Kilbert was growing really fast but got an unnoticed split on the bottom, I had to remove him, well, her, or maybe shim, to rot today.
