I've been going thru many pics and many diaries and have noticed something. I see some folks typing they have 4', 5', 6', etc. vines, and then I look at the pics. Where are they? Sometimes I can't even see much of a vine at all...and the pics are dead on shots. Hmmmmmmmm?

I saw one looking around last year, said it was 6 feet long but only looked about 3. Don't get it.

This same sort of thing seems to happens with some of my fishing buddies. They never seem to actually measure the fish with a ruler.:)

What difference does it make ? This is why I'm keeping silent with my growing this year ( except for a few folks) as someone would always question my ideas or worse...make a joke out of it. I used to give out info on growing 'maters ( I'm pretty damn good at it) but everytime I would someone who hasn't posted in months would chime in to tell me I'm all wrong & they're right.....So I stopped. I'm not upset with you Hoss, but this is the main reason most folks use this site only for the chat rooms now. What good did this post do except to poke at a few folks ???? I could go on, but sometimes it is best to stop with just a few words..............Paul

i usually post vine lengths and such on my diary so i can go back and see where I am at compared to last year, and then again next year i can go back and compare vine lengths and such. many of the longer vine lengths i see posted are for early fair competitions in august and were started in early april. last year at this time i had 1 to 2' vines, but this year so far with warmer weather and greenhouses my vines are all over 3' with one almost at 4' so it is still possible for those who started seeds at the tail end of april to be where they are saying. i am sure some are guestimating and are on the heavy side, but if you tape it out, then it is what it is.

huff, i always enjoyed reading your diary posts and you taught me alot a couple years ago when i first started. i wish everyone who used to post and stopped due to people telling them they wrong, stupid, absurd, liars, or braggards would ignore they nay sayers and post once again for mostly themselves and their record keeping and also for others to pick up tips or get new ideas. i have had my doubts about posting in my diary this year and was going to not post at all this year for the same reason huff, but i have my family and friends who enjoy seeing my updates even though i am so damn long winded. and also, 3 new growers friends this year will use them for the little knowledge i possess to help them along come pollination time.
just because someone posts a lot of diary info, doesn't mean they are rubbing it in the noses of others who may not have as good of fortune at this point. i miss don Q's posts and pappy's too and some other good people who stopped for whatever reasons. hopefully they stopped because they don't have the time they used too and not because of people who have nothing better than to do than to rib others and poke fun at everything. just my 2 cents. jeff

Hey Kyle, All my plants are about 6" vine stage, but should be 26 feet by the end of this week. My leaves are about 6 ft tall in the pics, thats why they look a little off, but they only have a 14" stalk on them so go figure.
For the record, most of the time the difference between a 4 ft vine, and an 8 ft vine is about 4-6 days, so those people that are embelishing a bit.....its not that far off. Let them think its a 14 ft vine. The bull-shit stops when the tailgate drops in October
peace out
Tom

Hey Paul, just funning around man! Ignore what other folks say, you know what you got. Lighten up and get with the spirit of the post....having fun, not being mean. I'm breaking up the monotony guy :0) If you'll notice, I don't make any claims, I just post lots-o-pics...that says enough (besides, I don't have much to make claims about anyway)

It'll take less than a week for most of the cold wet runts to explode. Chill out. Do nothing rash. We have one at 12" that hasn't landed & another at 51" with a wind torn leaf.
There is much to be said for a compact plant at this time.

Kyle, is right we all tell fish stories from time too time. The world would be a boring place if we didn't embellish a bit. All stories need to be more interesting. These diaries are the trials & tribulation we go through in our patches. I wish more of the expierenced growers would post here. It would help me to gain some more knowledge and judge my progress a bit better. Still fairly new at this, I just can't seam to leave my plants alone. I need some fatherly guidance to help me along. I like to follow many of you and enjoy a few good pictures from other growers in different parts of the world. However, I understand the competitive nature of this sport and the tatics that take place. We are all after the recognition in October.

When I went out to measure my pumpkin vines I was quit amazed on how long they really were. It has to be the 22-24 inch leaves making alot of plants look smaller then they are.

I heard from a friend of a friend of a friend that Jill already has a 22' vine with 4 fruits already set, the largest one taped in at around 210 poounds. I don't think she wanted anybody to know about that, though.
Mine are only around 12".

My best to this point is the Little plant. It's been up 25 days. The vine is 32" long and about 1 5/8" in diameter. The leaves are 17" across and 22" long.

My 530 Gancarz is at 6' and has a female pumpkin 5-8 days from opening, gonna be a nice orange throwing plant... mooooo hhaaaa haaaa haaaa!!!!! Paul, just wanna add people laughed and snickered about my cloning posts years ago. It pissed me off a little, but I kept on posting. Good things are coming from it now, so it matters little what others say. Everyone has different ideas and techniques when it comes to growing and might disagree, but a lot of input from a lot people helps out more than no input from anyone at all. You send those people who jerk you around my way. The Madman loves brains....fresh brains.....
