I seem to be off to a slow start. After a pretty warm April, May has been cool and wet. So now that I got my plant in early and haven't had to worry about frost, the cool weather seems to be slowing growth pretty good. Anybody else see this or is it my imagination?

Dave, seems a lot like last spring cool & wet......but look at the weights that were produced at Topsfield. We did have a warm Sept. in 03 lets hope 4 a better 04. I just got the standing water off the topsoil Friday and we have more rain on the way Tues & Wed.

I keep hearing about people with 4 foot vines. I have plants that are over a month old and still only a foot long. February was warmer than May in my area.

I would not be too concerned about a plant with a foot long vine at 30 days. It might be really packing on the roots below the soil, where you can't see daily progress.

Dave,
It's been too cool and wet in our area for the plants to be able to establish an extensive root system. I was weeding near my plants yesterday and in areas that should have feeder roots at this time, I found little or none present. We just need some drier weather with a little sun and things will be okay.

Thanks everyone. The plants look healthy so I guess I just have to be patient.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one with slow growth. I planted on May 14, and it's only to the stage of a small 3rd leaf forming.
I'm hoping the soil dries out enough, in a few days, to plant my second(and last vine).

The entire Midwest is getting rain. Give em a little sunshine and they'll be fine in within a few days.

Doug - that's not bad for 2 1/2 weeks old. It's about where I was with my plants at that age.

Gardening for 33 years, I have seen many slow starts that ended up being an excellent year, Patience, real hard when the rain won't stop, I moved to minnesota in 96, left a good zone 5, micro climate that probably was closer to zone 6. The first couple years were nothing but Learning , everything had to be done a little differently, Zone 4, flat, windy, I figure I am lucky after seeing some of the pics from warmer, dryer climates, that My plants are actually up to par with most of the growers here.

Good point Mr. B. Folks get impatient & frustrated when they see others whose plants have felt 3 or 4 more warm sunny days. Everything changes & evens out as weather dictates.

Take a big breathe....let it out slowly.....there....
