What is the best strategy of using bamboo stakes to keep your plants from getting blown around? I see pictures of plants with lots of stakes, but what is the method to the madness?

There's some pics in my diary, but I don't know if they're some of the best photos you'll find.
We had a tornado storm nearby last week and my plants were pummeled by the high winds. Stakes kept them in place and not a single broken stalk/ stump.
