This seems to be a personal decision that is guided by experience & soil type. Some don't ever bury the main. Others bury everything. We fall somewhere in between. I wouldn't bury any part of the first 2 feet. Then we bury all secondaries & the main only where the seconardy nodes are.
You might say I'm one who likes to "keep an eye on the main".
Other opinions will arise.

This is a tip that works well for me, more like an advantage. When there is new growth there delicate, so instead of throwing ground on them cause there sticking up and u want them to lay down, i raise the ground up to them tell there is ground just underneath them then i put a little bit of ground over them, In a couple days or so you can take the ground away and the vine will lay right down. Its hard to lay it right down the first 2 feet of main vine so instead of taking all of the soil out you just got to slop the main vine. Its usually is all the way down once u hit the 3 - 4 foot mark. Its even harder when u your plants are planted on a mound setting. GOOD LUCK!!!! Cory

what dont u get southern, how hard is to build the soil up the the vine before you bury them, i just thought i would mention it to him because any one who burys vines that are sticking up, will more then likely snap the vine if they are not growing flat on the ground.

I've seen people do this. If the vine is trying to sky & won't come down easily, he's pushing soil up under the offending vine to meet it from below. This offers some support until the vine settles down on it's own. Then it can be lowered.
