I planted my 1038 Emmons and the 713 Kurkowski at the distance of 6 ft. with the aim to grow main veins in the opposite direction but unfortunately 1038 vein don’t grow opposite to the first true leaf. Now my problem is how to redirect the main vein without damage for the plant.

Paolo,,,you must train it to run the way you want it to go..You will have to slowly turn her each day til it is in the position you want.Dont try to do all at once.Do over many days and be patient as the vines are brittle.I'm fixing to have to do this myself ,as I put one in backwards last 2 weeks ago and its same as yours,,going backwards from what I want..Good Luck..I'm sure others will make post..Best advice I ever got on turning a plant was from Bart...Bart,,help us out here......

I might add that if you let the vine get longer, you'll have "more to work with" and will be less likely to cause any stress to the vine. Only move the vine a little bit in the heat of the day when vines are more supple. Use stakes to keep it from wanting to go back!

I had the same problem with my plant. I waited for it to get taller then used a steak and a peice of cloth to nudge it the right way. took 8 days but its fine now..

Whatever method you choose, make sure to do any vine positioning during the heat of the day as they are more flexible then. Never do it in the morning and if possible also not in the evening or you might snap off the tip or even the whole vine.
Best wishes and good luck!

I'm redirecting 3 myself. Bamboo stakes, lots of patience and time. And you can redirect in the morning or early evening for the working folk, this time of year it's not that cold. I'm not having a bit of trouble in the am or pm...just go slow.

I experimented with some of my backup plants this year by planting them in my patch facing the wrong direction. I planted one opposite the first true leaf, one the same side as the first true leaf and two at 90 degrees to the first true leaf.

I planted them in the soil at a 45 degree angle so that they were somewhat facing the direction that I was going to try to get them to grow (ie. not pointing straight up). I then put the heating light in my cloches in the direction that I wanted them to grow (to help direct the plant growth in this direction). Each day when the plants were small I gently packed soil around the plants to keep them growing in the desired direction. I was eventually able to get every one of them to grow in the direction that I desired.

It is a pain to have to turn a growing vine 90 or 180 degrees because it didn't lay down in the right direction. I think that you can get them to grow any direction that you want if you start working on them early and use some of these techniques.
